Effectiveness of Health Education Program for Motorcycle Accident Prevention among Technical Students in Ubon Ratchathani Province

Abstract

This quasi-experimental research aimed to study the effectiveness of health education program for preventing motorcycle accidents among technical students in Ubon Ratchathani Province. The research was applied by the theory of health belief model in order to modify motorcycle accident prevention behaviors.

The sample group was the 3^rd year technical students majoring in auto mechanic certification in Ubon Ratchathani Province. Thirty samples were recruited by purposive sampling. Data were collected between January and May 2021. The total content validity of the questionnaires was 0.62, and the reliability was 0.60. Samples were provided health education program on the prevention of motorcycle accidents which included knowledge of traffic rules, perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, and perceived benefits of motorcycle accident prevention behaviors by using teaching materials such as slideshare, video clips, and participant observational technique. Overall, the health education program was provided for 6 times. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, namely percentage, mean, standard deviation, and inferential statistics. The mean scores before and after health education program were compared by Paired Samples T-test.

The results showed that before the program, the sample-knowledge on traffic rules was at a low level (20.0%). But after the program, the sample-knowledge on traffic rules statistically significantly increased to a high level at 90.0% (p<0.001), perceived susceptibility and perceived severity increased to a high level at 100.0% (p<0.001), perceived benefits increased to a high level at 96.7% (p<0.00 1), and perceived motorcycle accident prevention behaviors increased to a high level at 97.6% (p<0.008).
