Food Consumption, Energy and Nutrients Intake of Adolescent Pregnancy in the Antenatal Care Clinic at Somdet Hospital Kalasin Province

Abstract

Adolescent pregnancy has a complicated and more cumulative. This
brings about the problems of maternal and fetal health, especially the
nutritional problems caused by insufficient food intake and unmet weight
gain during pregnancy probably resulting in complications in the fetus. The
objectives of this study were to investigate food consumption, energy and
nutrients intake and to assess nutrition status of adolescent pregnancy in
the antenatal care clinic at Somdet Hospital, Kalasin province. This cross
sectional descriptive study was conducted in ninetythree pregnancies. Data
were collected by means of questionnaire which consisted of general
demographic data, food consumption patterns and food frequency. Nutritional
status was assessed by measuring weight and height. Energy and nutrients
intake were collected using 24hr dietary recall. Data were analyzed using
descriptive statistic. The energy and nutrient intakes were calculated using
INMUCAL version 3.
The result showed that 88.2% of the adolescent pregnancies were
1519 years old. 37.6% were 1st trimester. 94.6% were first pregnancy and
67.7% attended ANC clinic at gestation age ≤ 12 weeks. 74.1% were living
together without marriage certificate. 52.1% finished secondary school. 45.1%
were housewives/unemployment. 50.5% and 71.0% had moderate nutritional
knowledge and attitude towards food consumption, respectively. 47.1%
had normal prepregnant body mass index. 40.9% were unmet weighgain
during pregnancy. 71.0%, 55.9%, 40.9% and 59.1% consumed sticky rice,
meat, egg, milk and vegetable every day, respectively. The energy and protein
intake were 783.7 kilocalorie and 54.1 grams equal to 39.0% and 68.3%
according to dietary recommended intake. Energy distribution ratio of
Carbohydrate:Protein:Lipid was 33.3:27.3:32.4. Adolescent pregnancies consumed
vitamins and minerals less than the requirement except vitamin A and
vitamin B2.
Therefore, prevention and reduction of adolescent pregnancy rate
should be emphasized. And if they are pregnant, healthy food consumption
should be promoted for good nutritional status that affecting to mother
and child health.
