Abstract

The objective of this one group pretestposttest design was to assess
the nutritional education program for renal failure patients on hemodialysis
by comparing knowledge of nutrition, quantity of nutrients intake, nutritional
status and blood chemistry before and after implementing nutritional
education program. The participants were 33 renal failure patients treated
with hemodialysis attending at Renal Unit, Suthavej Hospital, Faculty of
Medicine, Mahasarakham University. The program was conducted for 14 weeks
during AprilJuly, 2017. Dependent ttest and Wilcoxon sign rank test were
performed for comparison. The results demonstrated that nutritional statuses
(SGA) of the participants were improved. Knowledge scores of nutrition after
implementing therapeutic program were improved statistically significant
from 15±10 to 19±7 (pvalue<0.0001). Means of energy and protein intake
were increased 103.20 kilocalories/day (95% CI=26.95179.19, pvalue=0.0052)
and 9.35 grams/day (95% CI=4.7913.90, pvalue<0.0001), respectively. It is
concluded that this nutritional education program for renal failure patient
on hemodialysis results in improving knowledge, nutrient intake and nutritional
status. This should be part of health care service for endstage renal failure
patient on hemodialysis in order to have good quality of life as well as to
prolong life.
