Concentrations of airborne fungi from dumping landfill a case study with a Khon Kaen municipality site, Khon Kaen Province
Abstract
The objective of this research was to determine the concentrations of airborne
fungi at four location snearal and fill in Khon Kaen municipality, Khon Kaen province.
Airborne fungal sampling was performed from November to December 2013 using an
Andersen 6-stage cascade impactor.
Concentrations of airborne fungi were measured at distances of 50 meters (m),
100m, 300m, and 500m in each the north, south, east, and west directions. A location 3000
m from the landfill was used as a control point for background concentrations (387.6±7.8
CFU/m3).
The results show that highest average concentrations of airborne fungi were
found at the farthest distance measured (500 m) from the landfill in the east and west
directions (3725.4±3.0 and 2190.7±3.2 CFU/m3, respectively). In the north and south
directions, the highest average concentrations of airborne fungi were found close to the
landfill at 1 0 0 m to the south ( 1852.4±3.2 CFU/m3) and 5 0 m to the north (1 2 9 2.5±
9.1CFU/m3).
The results demonstrate that airborne concentrations of fungi are higher in the
vicinity of the landfill, but not always increasing with proximity to the landfill.
