Abstract

This routine to research (R2R) descriptive cross-sectional study examined factors
related to over nutrition in children aged 10 to 15 years. The data was collected using
questionnaires. A total of 440 children aged 10 to 15 years living in Pralup Muang District,
Khon Kaen Province were randomly chosen from the school’s name list. The data were
analyzed using inferential statistics and multiple logistic regression to generate odds ratios
(OR). Analysis was completed after classifying two groups: overnutrition and non-over
nutrition.
The results showed that most participants had limited knowledge about dietary
guidelines and the nutrition flag. 51.95 percent of the subjects in the over nutrition group
and 44.35 percent of the non-over nutrition group followed the nutrition flag guidelines.
Variables were selected for the initial model by considering the existing knowledge and
theories related to overnutrition in the subjects, together with a binary logistic regression
analysis selecting only the variables giving p-value<0.25.Three variables (adherence to
nutrition flag on rice, vegetable and milk groups) were chosen. Results of multiple logistic
regression showed that the subjects who consumed rice at quantities recommended by the
nutrition flag had 2.04 times greater risk of over nutrition than those who did not adhere to
nutrition flag guidance of rice consumption( 9 5 % CI: 1.45–2.89).Consuming vegetables at
quantities recommended by the nutrition flag (OR=0.36, 95% CI: 0.15–0.84) reduced the risk
of over nutrition, while consuming milk at quantities recommended by the nutrition flag
(OR=1.57, 95% CI: 1.45 to 2.89) increased risk of overnutrition.
