The Effect of Nutrition Education Program by Application Health Belief Model and Social Support for Preventive Behavior of Opisthorchiasis among Secondary School Students in Nong Ko Sub District, Kranuan District, Khon Kaen Province

Abstract

This research is quasi-experimental research aimed to examine the effectiveness
of nutrition education programs by applying the theories of health belief model patterns
are social support for behaviors changed to prevent Opisthorchiasis in students from
secondary education in Nongko municipal area, Kranuan District, Khon Kaen province. The
samples were divided into 2 groups; experimental and comparison group, the participants
were 42 students each group. The data were collected by using the questionnaires before
and after the experiment. The experimental group were received nutrition education
programs which it consisted of group discussions, learning from video media, poster, Power
Point Presentation, brochures, games activity and exhibition. Research was conducted
during February–March 2014, the students participated in research for a 6 weeks period. In
comparison group did not receive any nutrition education programs. Data were analyzed
using the computer program STATA by using statistical frequency, percentage, average,
standard deviation, and comparing different types of knowledge, perceived risk of the
disease, perceived severity of the disease, perceived benefits and barriers to prevention,
self efficacy practices to prevent Opisthorchiasis a before and after the experiment to
compare in the experimental group and comparison group, and between the experimental
group and comparison group by using Independent t-test, Paired t-test, and 95%CI.
The findings indicated that after the intervention, the experimental group had
mean scores on the knowledge of Opisthorchiasis, perceived risk of the disease, perceived
severity of the disease, perceived benefits and barriers to prevention, self efficacy practices
to prevent Opisthorchiasis over than before the project and the comparison group with
statistical difference (P<0.05). From this research, it can concluded that nutrition education
program can be used as a guide to modify behavior in the prevention and control of other
diseases.
