Effect of Health Promotion Behavior Program among Overweight and Obese Subjects in Mueang Yang Sub-district, Chamni District, Buriram Province

Abstract

The objective of thisquasi-experimental study was to investigate the effects of a
health promotion program among overweight and obese subjects in Mueang Yang subdistrict,
Chamni district, Buriram province, using the Self-Efficacy and the Social Support
theories. There were 30 individuals in each of the two groups, selected by using the
purposive sampling method according to the study’s selecting criteria. The participants
involved in the study for 12 weeks. The experimental group was provided with health
promoting activities which took 3 hours 30 minutes each week. The activities included
health education on diet and exercise in the forms of lectures, video presentations and
leaflets, group discussions for idea exchange on diet and exercise, the selection of model
people for successful weight control, group discussions for exchanging ideas on the benefits
of the health promotion manual, the demonstrations and practice on diet selection and
aerobic exercises, group discussions for exchanging ideas on the problems regarding diet
selection and aerobic exercises, behavior recordings, pairing members to help and encourage
each other, and giving supports by the researcher. The comparison group received usual
health education from the Health Promoting Hospital of the Mueang Yang sub-district,
Chamni district, Buriram province. The data were analyzed for general information using
descriptive statistics, and the comparisons were analyzed by the Dependent t-test and
Independent t-test at the 0.05 significance level.
After the treatment, the experimental group had significantly higher scores of
self-efficacy on weight control, outcome expectation for weight control, and the weight
control performance than those before the treatment at the 0.05 level. They also had
significantly lower body mass index than what they had before the treatment, and lower
than the controlled group at the 0.05 significance level. The finding indicated that the
health promotion program was effective for weight control among overweight and obese
individuals.
