Prevalence and Behaviors of Alcohol Beverage Consumption of High School Student in Pakse District, Champasack Province, Lao PDR

The objectives of this cross-sectional survey were to determine the
prevalence and to explain alcohol beverage consumption behaviors in high school
students. Three thousand two hundred eighteen students of secondary school grade
5th, 6th, and 7th in Pakse District, Champasack Province, Lao PDR and sample size is
Two hundred and eighty-nine participated in the study. Data were collected from
May to June 2016 using questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were calculated. Percent,
mean and standard deviation were presented. For inferential statistics, Chi-square
test, Odds’ ratio and 95% CI were performed to determine association. Statistical
significance was set at p-value<0.05 The sample was divided into two phases. The
sample size calculations using formulas to estimate the proportion of the
population know. The selected sample is stratified sampling (Stratified Random
sampling) the tools used to monitor the quality of the content. And the reliability.
The result showed that 50.9% (95% CI=44.9, 56.8) of high school students
of Pakse district, Champasak Province, Lao PDR, consumed alcohol beverage. 63.4%
of the students living in non-municipality consumed alcohol beverage whereas
students living in municipality consuming alcohol beverage was 42.6%. Female
students took alcohol 48.5% meanwhile male students took 54.2%. Beer was the
most first drink (50.3%). M ale s tudents t ook b eer a s f irst d rink ( 50.0%) whereas
female students took wine (50.6%) as first drink. The reason of first taking alcohol
was peer inviting (38.1%). The most popular drink was beer (41.5%), followed by
wine (30.6%). Majority of the student took alcohol with peer (90.5%). Majority took
alcohol (61.9%) with peer in party followed by festival (41.5%). Factors associated
with alcohol beverage consumption were non-municipality residential area (crude
OR=2.36; 95% CI=1.46, 3.82), parent’s support drinking alcohol (crude OR=2.34; 95%
CI=1.44, 3.8) and poor relationship in family (crude OR=2.09; 95% CI=1.24, 3.54).
The results of the study indicate that more than half of high school
student of Pakse district, Champasak Province, Lao PDR consumed alcohol beverage.
Female students drink was almost same as male students. One of factors associated
with alcohol consumption was parent’s support. So that parent should closely
regular monitor and control behavior of the students as well as act as a good role
model for the students.
