Buddhist monks (novices) grow rapidly and need a lot of energy
and nutrients. But the novice’s discipline limits meal two times a day.
This may affect the amount of energy and nutrients they received. The
objectives of this study were to assess the nutritional status and examine
food consumption in 116 Novices aged 13-18 years at Demonstration Pali
School Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya, Srisaket Temple, Nongkhai
Province. Data were collected by weighing, measuring height, using
questionnaires and 3-day food record. Nutritional status was analyzed by
using the INMU Thai growth program. Nutrients intake were calculated
using INMUCAL-Nutrients V3 program. Data were analyzed using
descriptive statistic.
The results of nutritional assessment showed that of 116 novices
based on weight for age standards, 17.2 % were overweight. Based on
height for age, 6.9% and 5.2% were quite short and stunted. Based on
weight for height, 10.3% and 7.8% were obese and getting fat. Novices
aged 13-15 year had 94.2% of DRI for energy intake, 111.1% of DRI for
protein intake. Whereas, Novices aged 16-18 year had 86.2% of DRI for
energy intake, 106.5% of DRI for protein intake. Both groups had
inadequate nutrients in calcium, iron (only novices aged 16-18 year),
vitamin A and vitamin C intake. The nutrition knowledge and attitudes of
novices were moderate. For food consumption, novices consumed two
meals a day. A source of foods for breakfast was obtained from the alms.
A source of food for before lunch was obtained from Buddhist brought to
the temple or some temples had prepared.
Therefore, nutritional consumption management of the temple
according with dietary requirements per day should be conducted in
order to achieve appropriated novices need.
