Participation of the Population in Solid Waste Separation at the Taepalai Municipality, Khong District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province

This cross-sectional descriptive study aimed to investigate the participation of the population in solid
waste separation. The study also investigated why people were willing or not to participate in solid waste
separation. Information was collected from 225 representatives of households living in the study area using a
face to face interview applying a structured questionnaire. The study was conducted between January and
April 2011. The data were analyzed using descriptive- and analytical statistics, obtaining Pearson,s product
moment correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression with a reliability of the 95% CI and a significant
level of 0.05.
The results revealed that the level of participation of the population in solid waste separation was
neither good nor bad; ( X = 2.2, S.D. = 0.37, 95%CI = 2.17 – 2.27). The situation could be improved in taken
the following steps: Support the efforts by providing adequate information from the relevant organizations.
Gender and social status within the community also played a role (p-value < 0.001).
The results of this study could be used to predict people's participation in solid waste separation for the
entire Taepalai Municipality, Khong District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province.
