Prevalence of Alcohol Drinking Problem and Related Factors among Farmers in Sophisai District, Bungkan Province

Abstract

The descriptive correlational study was conducted to determine prevalence of
alcohol drinking problem and related factors among farmers in Sophisai district, Bungkan
province. The sample comprised 496 male and 204 female aged 25 years old and over,
selected by systematic random sampling. The Alcohol Use Disorder
Identification Test; AUDIT (Thai version) was employed to assess alcohol drinking problem.
The findings were as following. The prevalence of alcohol drinking problem among
overall sample was 80.6 percent (95% CI=77.6-83.6). Prevalence in male was higher than
female at 85.5 percent (95% CI=82.4-88.6) and 68.6 percent (95% CI=62.3-75.0) respectively.
The results from an ordinal logistic regression analysis showed male with high perception
on the consequence of alcohol drinking tend to have alcohol drinking problem lower than
their counterpart (ORadj=0.54; 95% CI=0.31-0.96). The factors related to alcohol drinking problem
among female included having lower educational level (ORadj=2.11; 95% CI=1.11-3.99),
having child-bearing or caring of their family member (OR=0.37; 95% CI=0.16-0.86), and
getting information via a radio (ORadj=3.32; 95% CI=1.08-10.15).
Prevalence of alcohol drinking problem was high both in male and female but the
related factors were different.
