This cross-sectional descriptive research aimed to describe work efficiency of
emergency nurses working under conflict situations in the three southern border
provinces of Thailand. Also the management of head nurses to ensure the safety of the
workplace as perceived by subordinates are investigated. The participants
comprised of 178 nurses working as emergency nurses at community hospitals
selected by purposive sampling. A questionnaire was developed consisting of 3 parts,
namely (1) assessing general data, (2) investigating work efficiency based on the health
problems related the unrest situation, and (3) safety management of the head nurses.
The questionnaire was validated by three experts and the reliability of parts 2 and 3
tested using the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, resulting in values of 0.89 and 0.86
respectively. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard
deviation and the t-test. The results showed that (1) the mean total score of work
efficiency of the emergency nurses was at a medium level (Mean=1.11, SD=0.49) as
were the psychological (Mean=1.87, SD=0.75) social (Mean=1.02, SD=0.66) and
spiritual domains (Mean=1.27, SD=0.83), but the physical domain was at low level
(Mean=0.20, SD=0.37)(2). The safety management of the head nurses as perceived
by emergency nurses was at a medium level (Mean=3.42, SD=0.76). The results of
this research indicate that emergency nurses in the three southern border
provinces are aware of hazards in the workplace. In particular, head nurses should
support and empower emergency nurses in the psychological domain to promote
safety in the workplace.
