Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To study the effectiveness of a cognitive stimulation program among older adults with mild cognitive impairment in Khiensa Subdistrict, Khiensa District, Surat Thani. Methods: This research was a quasi-experimental study with a one-group pretest–posttest design. The subjects consisted of 32 older adults aged 60–69 years with mild cognitive impairment residing in the catchment area of Khiensa Hospital. The study was conducted from December 2025 to March 2026. The core activities of the Program included cognitive stimulation exercises targeting attention, memory, visuospatial ability, and executive function (thinking and decision-making). The subjects completed the dementia knowledge test and the standardized Montreal Cognitive Assessment before and after participating in the 4-week Program. Results Mean score of dementia-related knowledge after participation in the Program was significantly higher than that before participation (5.69±1.23 vs. 12.66±1.54 from the full score of 15, P<0.001). Mean cognitive function score after the intervention was significantly higher than the pre-intervention score (18.44±0.72 vs. 25.59±0.95 out of 30, P<0.001). Conclusion: Participation in the cognitive stimulation program among older adults with early cognitive impairment was significantly associated with higher levels of dementia-related knowledge and improved cognitive function. These findings suggest that the program may contribute to enhancing both cognitive knowledge and cognitive performance in older adults with early cognitive impairment, thereby supporting self-care abilities and potentially delaying further cognitive decline.
