Outcomes of Pharmaceutical Care in Anemic Pregnant Women at Health Promoting Hospital, Health Promotion Center Region 1, Chiang Mai

Abstract
Objective: To determine the effects of pharmaceutical care on clinical outcomes, knowledge of iron deficiency anemia in pregnant women, compliance to iron supplementation, iron-rich food intake per day, and to study iron supplementation-related problems (DRPs). Methods: The study design is a quasi-experimental study involving 80 pregnant women with anemia, divided into two groups of 40 participants. The experimental group received pharmaceutical care three times one month apart, along with standard antenatal care. The control group received standard antenatal care. Clinical outcomes were assessed by measuring hemoglobin (Hb) and hematocrit (Hct) levels. Knowledge of iron deficiency anemia in pregnant women was evaluated through tests. Compliance to iron supplementation was assessed by counting pills. Iron-rich food intake was evaluated through a 3-day food diary. Results: At the end of the study, 72 participants remained (36 in the experimental group and 36 in the control group). After receiving pharmaceutical care, the experimental group had significantly higher mean Hb and Hct levels than the control group by 0.26 g/dL (95% CI, 0.01-0.50; adjusted P = 0.044) and 0.83% (95% CI, 0.12-1.53; adjusted P = 0.022), respectively. The experimental group showed significantly higher levels of knowledge of iron deficiency anemia in pregnant women, compliance to iron supplementation, iron-rich food intake compared to the control group. A total of 70 DRPs were identified in the experimental group, with the most common being non-compliance to iron supplementation. Conclusion: Pharmaceutical care intervention significantly improved clinical outcomes, knowledge regarding iron deficiency anemia, and the consumption of iron-rich foods among pregnant women, while also significantly enhancing medication adherence.
