Abstract

Objective: To study the quality of life and its relationship with and service deliveries for antiretroviral drugs among people with stable HIV disease in Rajavithi Hospital. Methods: This cross-sectional analytical study collected data from HIV-infected people with antiretroviral therapy and stable conditions of disease who received treatment and had relevant information in their medical records between March 1 and December 31, 2022. There were 3 service deliveries for antiretroviral drugs including 1) receiving drugs by attending a physician’s appointment, 2) regular medication refill with a pharmacist, and 3) regularly receiving medication through postal delivery. Quality of life measuring tool was Thai version of the brief World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale for HIV patients. Results: A total of 464 HIV-infected patients participated in the study, comprising 161 of those receiving medication after attending physician appointment (34.7 percent), 164 of those with medication refills from a pharmacist (35.3%), and 139 of those with postal drug delivery (30.0%). Subjects were 320 males (68.9%) with mean age of 43.8±9.7 years. The mean overall quality of life was 110.8±16.9 (full score of 155). People living with HIV with postal drug delivery had a higher quality of life score than those who received drugs after physician visits by 4.66 points (95%CI 0.58, 8.74), which was statistically significant (P=0.025). However, it was found that HIV-infected patients with medication refill with a pharmacist had no difference in quality of life scores from those receiving drug after physician visits when controlling for the influence of confounding variables. Conclusion: Quality of life scores among stable HIV-infected patients receiving medication through postal delivery was higher than those who received medication after physician visits. Therefore, stable HIV-infected patients should participate in postal drug delivery.
