Job Burnout and Job Satisfaction among Hospital Pharmacists

Abstract
Objectives: To determine levels of burnout and its related factors among hospital pharmacists; to examine the relationship between burnout and job satisfaction, and to identify coping strategies used by pharmacists to alleviate burnout symptoms. Methods: This study was cross-sectional survey research in 1,400 pharmacists with at least one year of working experiences in hospitals affiliated with the Ministry of Public Health. Using health regions as strata, stratified random sampling was used to select the subjects. The QR code allowed participants to access and complete online questionnaires. In this study, the Maslach Burnout Inventory was utilized. If one or more dimensions of burnout were at a high level, the subject was considered to be burnt out. The Smith, Kendall, and Hulin scale was used to measure job satisfaction. Correlations between personal factors, work-related, and job satisfaction were determined by logistic regression. Results: Thirty-one percent of pharmacists returned the questionnaire. However, only 406 responses were complete. Thirty percent of pharmacists reported suffering from burnout, particularly in emotional exhaustion (23.4 percent). Those with 1-10 years of working experience and more than 31 hours of overtime per week were 3.82 and 2.26 times more likely, to experience burnout, respectively, to experience burnout. Job satisfaction regarding the supervisory behaviors was associated with reduced burnout (odds ratio = 0.57). Relaxation from stress by engaging in enjoyable activities was the most common method for reducing burnout symptoms in both groups with and without burnout. Conclusion: One-third of hospital pharmacists reported experiencing burnout. Length of employment and average weekly overtime hours were risk factors for burnout. Satisfaction in management performance was related to a reduced level of burnout. The most common coping strategy for burnout reported by pharmacists was participating in enjoyable activities.
