Behavior of Antibiotic Uses among Elderlies with Chronic Diseases in the Communities
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objectives: to investigate the elderly's knowledge, attitudes, and behavior towards antibiotics, as well as the factors affecting their antibiotic use. Method: This descriptive study employed retrospective secondary data from database on the RDU Community program in 2019 of the Thai Food and Drug Administration, Ministry of Public Health. Subjects in this study were elderlies with chronic diseases over 60 years old living in households in various provinces of Thailand. The instrument was the questionnaire on knowledge, attitudes, and behavior towards antibiotics. Result: A total of 5,631 questionnaires from 34 provinces were analyzed. Two-thirds of elderlies were female. Around half of them aged 60-69 years old. The majority of them had completed elementary school and had more than two chronic diseases. Average score of knowledge on antibiotics use was 1.90±1.98 (possible score 0-6), while that on attitude towards antibiotics was 9.11±2.29 (possible score 4-12), and that on behavior towards antibiotics was 10.68±1.68 (possible score 4-12). The score on knowledge and attitude towards antibiotic use significantly explained 15% of the variance of behavior towards antibiotics (P < 0.001). The effect of attitude (β = 0.374, P < 0.001) on behavior on antibiotics use was stronger than that of knowledge (β = 0.032, P < 0.05). Conclusion: Knowledge and attitude towards antibiotic use directly affected behavior towards antibiotics. Thus, interventions and activities for the elderly should be tailored to their needs in order to improve their knowledge and attitudes towards antibiotic use, which will lead to rational use of antibiotics among the elderlies.
