Effects of the Intervention for Promoting the Prescribing of Herbal Medicines in the National Lists of Essential Medicines in Community Hospitals at Mahasarakham Province

Abstract
Objective: To develop the intervention for promoting the prescribing of herbal medicines in the National Lists Esential Medicines, and to evaluate the effect of the implementation of intervention in community hospitals at Mahasarakham Province. Methods: This study was participatory action research (PAR). The study collected qualitative data together with teh quantitative data by conducting the brian-storming among 22 health care professionals from five community hospitals in Mahasarakham Province to inform the formulation of intervention for promoting the prescribing of herbal medicines in the National Lists Esential Medicines. Subsequently, the study evaluated the effect of intervention on five herbal medicines including Derris Scandens, Prasaplai, Clinacanthus Nutans, Cissus Quadrangularis and anti-diarrheal drug (Thatbanjob) in five community hospitals during September 1 to November 30, 2019. Results: The developed intervention for promoting the prescribing of herbal medicines in the National Lists Esential Medicines consisted of 1) pharmacists informing the Pharmacy and Therapeutic Committee of the hospitals on the intervention, 2) pharmacists providing information on herbal medicines to health care professionals, 3) pharmacists providing information on herbal medicines to patients receiving services at the hospitals, and 4) specifying roles in each health care professional in promoting the use of herbal medicines. After implementing the intervention, it was found that prescribing of five herbal medicines in five community hospitals increased from 563 to 738 times (31.08% increase). Inappropriate prescribing of the herbal medicines reduced from 167 to 9 times (94.6% reduction). Conclusion: PAR with the brain-storming among health care professionals involving the prescbing of herbal medicines was able to formulate practical intervention for promoting the prescribing of herbal medicines in the National Lists Esential Medicines, leading to the increase of prescribing of herbal medicines among health profesionals in community hospitals in Mahasarakham Province, and the reduction of drug-related problems in the prescribing of herbal medicines.
