Effects of Pharmacy Counseling on Outpatients Receiving Lithium from the Department of Psychiatry at a University Hospital
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To study the effect of counseling provided by pharmacists in patients receiving lithium drugs on knowledge of such drugs. Method: This research was a pre-and post-test study in 39 subjects receiving lithium. Outcome assessment was conducted using questionnaires on knowledge regarding lithium use consisting of 4 domains i.e., medication information and side effects, how to take medicine, self-care and drug interactions. There were 3 times of outcome measurement i.e., before giving advice, after giving advice immediately and at next hospital visit approximately 12 weeks after giving advice. Results: Two measurement of knowledge after pharmacy counseling revealed the study participants had a significantly increased level of overall knowledge, compared to the level before the study. Median scores of knowledge were 5, 11 and 11 (from the full score 12) before giving advice, after giving advice immediately and at the next 12 weeks. The study did not find any statistically significant differences in knowledge score between that after receiving advice and that in the next 12 weeks (P = 0.268). Knowledge in the domains of medication information and side effects, how to take medicine, and self-care showed the same pattern as that of overall knowledge. However, knowledge in drug interactions immediately after receiving advice was statistically higher than that in the next 12 weeks (P=0.045). Conclusion: Educating by pharmacists in patients receiving lithium drugs enables patients to be more knowledgeable in using lithium. Such increased knowledge persists even though the time has passed for a long time. This may be an important part to help reduce problems from drug use.
