Development of a Curriculum for Aircraft Mechanics to Improve Maintenance Standards in Thailand

This research aimed to: (1) investigate the current conditions and development needs of aircraft technicians; (2) analyze competency gaps between existing technician capabilities and the Thailand Civil Aviation Regulations: TCAR standards; and (3) develop a training curriculum aligned with international standards. A mixed-methods research design was employed. The sample comprised 280 participants, including airline executives, aircraft technicians, maintenance personnel, and aviation experts. Research instruments included structured questionnaires and in-depth interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative data were examined through content analysis. The findings indicated that, although existing training programs complied with TCAR standards, they lacked sufficient coverage of modern technical knowledge, advanced tool-handling competencies, and international aviation safety standards. The developed training curriculum, designed based on the ADDIE instructional model and evaluated using Kirkpatrick’s four-level evaluation framework, significantly enhanced participants’ competencies. Mean scores increased from 3.15 to 4.35 in knowledge, from 3.00 to 4.45 in skills, and from 3.40 to 4.60 in attitudes. In conclusion, the study recommends integrating advanced training technologies, strengthening competency-based assessment systems, and fostering collaboration with leading international aviation training institutions. These measures are essential for sustainably enhancing the quality of Thailand’s aviation workforce and ensuring alignment with global aviation standards.
