ภาวะซึมเศร้าเป็นปัญหาด้านจิตใจที่เพิ่มขึ้นในวัยรุ่น ก่อให้เกิดพฤติกรรมรุนแรง มีปัญหาด้านการเรียน อารมณ์ ใช้ยาเสพติด และนำไปสู่การฆ่าตัวตายในที่สุด บทความนี้ได้นำเสนอความสำคัญของบทบาทของเพื่อนในการช่วยเพื่อนที่มีภาวะซึมเศร้า โดยใช้หลัก MAST (M: Monitor, A: Activity S: Support, T: Treatment) โดยนำเสนอข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับบทบาทของเพื่อนช่วยเพื่อนในการ สังเกตและเฝ้าระวังภาวะซึมเศร้าในตัวเพื่อน (monitor), บทบาทของเพื่อนในการส่งเสริมกิจกรรมทางกายและจิตใจ (activity), บทบาทของเพื่อนในการสนับสนุนให้กำลังใจเพื่อน (support) และบทบาทของเพื่อนช่วยเพื่อนให้เข้ารับการรักษาภาวะซึมเศร้า (treatment) วัยรุ่นนั้นมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงทั้งด้านร่างกาย อารมณ์ และสังคม มีความเสี่ยงสูงต่อการเกิดภาวะซึมเศร้า อาการอาจ คล้ายคลึงกับอารมณ์เศร้า ทั่วไป ซึ่งสังเกตได้ยาก ทำให้ไม่สามารถช่วยเหลือได้อย่างทันท่วงที ปัญหาที่สำคัญ คือ การเข้าไม่ถึง วัยรุ่นที่มีภาวะซึมเศร้า ดังนั้นบทบาทของเพื่อนจึงมีความสำคัญในการช่วยเหลือและเพื่อนจะมีอิทธิพลต่อเพื่อนในด้านต่าง ๆ มากกว่าผู้อื่น โดยให้เพื่อนช่วยสังเกตและเฝ้าระวัง ทำกิจกรรมต่าง ๆ ร่วมกัน ให้กำลังใจกัน และสนับสนุนให้เพื่อนรับการรักษา เพื่อ ให้ผู้ที่มีภาวะซึมเศร้ารู้สึกมีคุณค่าในตัวเองและใช้ชีวิตได้อย่างมีความสุขต่อไป
