The Experiences of Pregnancy among Early Teenagers in Urban Areas of a Province in Northern Thailand

Abstract

          Early teenage pregnancy has rapidly and continuously increased. The purpose of this phenomenological research was to describe the experiences of pregnancy among early teenagers. Participants were early teenagers who experienced pregnancy under the age of 15-year-old in urban areas of a province in northern Thailand. Data were collected by using indepth interviews with a tape-recorder. The saturated data were found at 12 participants. Tape-recorded interviews were transcribed verbatim. Data were analyzed by using Colaizzi’s method.


          The findings revealed that the experiences of pregnancy among early teenagers could be categorized into 5 major themes as follows: 1) Being motivated via social media without consideration 2) Suffering with physical, psychological and spiritual pain 3) Not being mature to choose their life ways 4) Hope and encouragement that can be concrete and abstract and 5) Lessons learned brought to future’s plan.


          The findings of this study suggested that nurses or health care providers, parents and stakeholders should understand the experiences of pregnancy among early teenagers. These findings will be basic information to enable planning for support of insight into how teenagers  pregnancy and lead to care pregnant girl effectively
