Comparison of Knowledge of Anxiety before and after participating in the supportive therapy group in parents of autistic children, Angthong Hospital

Introduction: Knowledge and anxiety of parents of autistic children can affect parents’ care. This research aimed to investigate knowledge and anxiety of parents of autistic children before and after participating in the supportive group therapy at Angthong Hospital.
Methods: This quasi-experimental research was participated by 15 parents caring for autistic children. They were specifically selected and enrolled in the support group therapy developed by the researcher from January 16, 2018 to January 31, 2019. The instrument was a general information questionnaire: (1) Autism Patient Knowledge Scale and (2) State Anxiety: Form XI. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics including percentage, mean, standard deviation, and t-test.
Results: After the end of program, the parents in the supportive group therapy had a higher average knowledge score with a statistically significant difference of .05. In terms of anxiety, the mean scores after participating in the supportive group therapy were not statistically different at the 05 level.
Conclusion: The supportive group therapy can help parents increase their knowledge and reduce their anxiety.
