Factors Related to Electronic Cigarette Smoking Behavior of Vocational Students at the Institute of Vocational Education Central Region 1

This analytical cross-sectional research aimed to investigate electronic cigarette smoking behavior and explore factors related to electronic cigarette smoking behavior of vocational students at the Institute of Vocational Education Central Region 1. The sample group consisted of 357 vocational students, obtained through multi-stage random sampling. The research instrument was a questionnaire with 5 parts: 1) personal factors, 2) knowledge about electronic cigarettes, with a reliability coefficient of 0.738, 3) attitude about electronic cigarettes, with a reliability coefficient of 0.717, 4) news exposure regarding electronic cigarette, with a reliability coefficient of 0.868 and 5) electronic cigarette smoking behavior. Data were analyzed using statistics including frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and Chi-squared test.
The findings revealed that 31.10% of the sample group exhibited electronic cigarette smoking behavior. Factors related to their electronic cigarette smoking behavior included age, monthly income, electronic cigarette use by their father, partner, and friends, knowledge about electronic cigarettes, attitudes toward electronic cigarettes, and news exposure related to electronic cigarettes. Relationship between these factors and their electronic cigarette smoking behavior was statistical significant at 0.05.
The results of this research can be applied to the development of a preventive model and assessment of the feasibility of addressing electronic cigarettes and other tobacco use among vocational students and other groups of teenagers.
