Abstract

Low back pain is probably caused by degenerative spondylolisthesis. There are insufficient studies related to low back pain in the Thai population. Therefore, this retrospective cross-sectional study investigated 1,051 patients with chronic low back pain who received treatment at the Orthopedic Clinic, Saraburi Hospital. Data were analyzed to discover the prevalence of this disease and factors including age, gender, BMI, and occupation.

The results revealed that the prevalence of degenerative spondylolisthesis was 26.83%. The prevalence for the disease in males and females was 18.87% and 30.89%, respectively, resulting in a higher prevalence for the disease in females with an odds ratio of 1.92 (95%CI, 1.41–2.62). The prevalence of the disease in those aged less than 50 years was 19.27%, and in those aged 50 years and over was 28.81%, resulting in a higher prevalence for the disease in those ages 50 years and over with an odds ratio of 1.69 (95%CI, 1.17–2.45). The mean BMIs in the spondylolisthesis group and the non-listhesis group were 24.7±2.80 and 24.4±2.85 (P-value 0.156), respectively. Thus, there was no statistically difference. The result of the comparison of manual labor and desk worker groups using two-sample t-test and chi-squared test revealed no statistical difference with an odds ratio of 1.20 (95%CI, 0.91–1.58).

In conclusion, approximately one-fourth of Thai people with chronic low back pain suffer from degenerative spondylolisthesis, and there is a higher prevalence for the disease among females and individuals aged 50 years and over.
