Effects of Project-Based Learning through Health Literacy Promotion Programtowards Medical Use of Cannabis of Nursing Students, Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Nakhon Si Thammarat

Abstract

This quasi-experimental study aimed to conduct pre- and post-experiments to investigate the effects of project-based learning through a health literacy promotion program towards medical use of cannabis of nursing students at Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Nakhon Si Thammarat. The subjects were third-year nursing students in the course, Community Nursing Practicum 1.  The research utilized a questionnaire to obtain data of respondents’ health knowledge and health literacy.  The reliability scores of questions of knowledge and health literacy were 0.90 and 0.84, respectively. Data analysis was conducted using statistics paired t-test, and independent t-test.

The results of the post-experiment revealed that the experimental group’s overall scores in health knowledge (p > 0.001), general knowledge about marijuana (p > 0.001), and knowledge about the adverse effects of herbal marijuana treatment (p = 0.005) were significantly higher when compared to the control group, with statistical significance. In terms of health literacy, the experimental group had a significantly higher score in Health Literacy in media (p = 0.044) compared to the control group. When comparing the average scores of the control group and the experimental group, the overall health knowledge and knowledge in all aspects (p < 0.001) were higher with statistical significance. Similarly, the overall health literacy and health literacy in all aspects displayed by the experimental group (p < 0.05) were statistically higher.

In conclusion, project-based learning was effective in enhancing students’ knowledge and could be applied in nursing education, allowing them to learn through practical experience and self-directed learning effectively.
