Pregnancy with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: Contributing Factors and Barriers to Self-care

Gestational diabetes is detected for the first time during pregnancy. It is the number one medical complication in pregnant women. If the blood sugar level is poorly controlled, it will affect both the mother and the baby, such as difficult birth, hypertension, preeclampsia, and premature birth. In addition, infants may suffer from difficult breathing at birth, etc. These effects can be prevented or reduced by keeping their blood sugar levels within or near normal levels. Therefore, to control their blood sugar levels properly pregnant women must have appropriate and consistent self-care behaviors. Controlling blood sugar levels depends on supporting factors and barriers to self-care such as perception of diabetes and gestational diabetes severity, service access, family interactions and personnel in the service unit, etc. Therefore, nurses play an important role in promoting supporting factors and reducing barriers to self-care for pregnant women with diabetes to control their blood sugar levels and prevent complications.
