Abstract

Background: Currently, effective screening instruments for social anxiety disorder (SAD) in adult in Thailand are still limited. In 2008, the brief form of the Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory (SPAI-B) testified for validity and reliability was used as a self-rated questionnaire for screening forSAD in Spanish population.

Objective: This study aimed to study the validity and reliability of the Thai version of SPAI-B.

Methods: After receiving approval from the copyright owner, the SPAI-B was translated into Thai using backward translation. 163 subjects were recruited to complete the Thai version of SPAI-B and clinically screened for SAD using the DSM-5 as the gold standard suggested by the American Psychiatric Association. Cronbach gif.latex?\alpha and Index of consistency (IOC) were respectively used to examine internal reliability and content validity. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to determine the cutoff score for SPAI-B.

Results: The Cronbach gif.latex?\alpha of the Thai version of SPAI-B was 0.95. The point-biserial correlation coefficient
between the Thai version of SPAI-B and the diagnosis of SAD was 0.64. The cutoff score of 33 was set by ROC analysis with a sensitivity of 0.94 and a specificity of 0.78.

Conclusion: The Thai version of SPAI-B demonstrated good validity and excellent reliability and it could be used as an effective screening tool for social anxiety disorder in Thai people.
