Effect of the Caregiver Skills Development Program on the Ability to Perform Daily Activities of the Dependent Elderly in Mueang District, Ang thong Province

The quasi-experimental research, with one group pretest-posttest design, aimed to compare the knowledge, skills, and behaviors of caregivers providing care for the dependent elderly participating in the Caregiver Skills Development Program and to compare the Barthel Activities of Daily Living (ADL) of the elderly taken care by the caregivers b from March to May 2022. A sample group of 31 caregivers in Muang Ang Thong District was selected by purposive sampling. The research tools consisted of a caregiver skill development program consisting of 7 activities, a questionnaire consisting of survey questions about a knowledge, skills, behavior, and ADL.Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics. including, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and the Wilcoxon signed rank test.
The results showed that, after joining the caregiver skills development program, the samples’ knowledge, skills, and behavior in providing care for the elderly were higher with a statistical significance of 0.01. The elderly taken care by the caregivers having participated in the program could perform daily activities more effectively with a significance level of 0.01.
Therefore, the development of the knowledge and skills of caregivers could promote their self-efficacy, enhancing their skills and confidence in taking care of the elderly and rehabilitating the elderly resulting in their effective performance of daily activities.
