Development of a Nursing Model for Coronavirus Care 2019 (COVID-19)

Abstract

Introduction: Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, nurses need to develop themselves to keep up with changes in order to ensure the safety of patients and themselves.

Method: This research was conducted to develop a nursing care model for COVID-19 patients. The subjects were 22 head nurses, 277 nurses, and 556 patients (medical records), the number of which was obtained through specific sampling.  The model was developed through 4 steps: 1) situation analysis, 2) model development, 3) trial, and 4) model evaluation. The research instruments were: (1) a questionnaire to evaluate head nurses’ knowledge of clinical supervision of which content validity was approved by five experts, (2) a questionnaire to evaluate the knowledge of professional nurses, (3) a patient care record form, (4) a quality nursing record form, and (5) a questionnaire to evaluate satisfaction towards the nursing care model. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, paired T-test, Wilcoxon signed rank test, Chi-square test, and content grouping analysis.

Results: The results revealed that the outcomes of both patients and health care providers were significantly higher in all aspects (p<.05). In terms of the organizational aspect, the quality of nursing records and the head nurses’s satisfaction after using this model were at the highest level.
