Effect of Cannabidiol (CBD) on Patients with Psychiatric Disorders: a Systematic Review

Abstract

Introduction: Cannabis is a plant that has a psychoactive effect. It has been used as a medicine since ancient times. The UK has used cannabis to treat depression. China has used cannabis and wine as an anesthetic. Marijuana has been used in India to suppress nerve pain, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, epilepsy, movement disorders, depression, and psychosis. Thailand classifies marijuana as a Category 5 drug under the Narcotic Drug Act1979, and medical marijuana was allowed in 2019 and is still rare in the treatment of medical psychiatric patients. The purpose of this study was to review the body of knowledge related to cannabis and psychiatric disorders.

Methods: A systematic review of related articles obtained from the electronic databases of Pub Med and Google Scholar. The study emphasized articles that have been published from 2002 to 2022. The reviewed articles were assessed for their quality using the research quality assessment form suggested by Heller RF, et al. (2008).

Results: According to the result, a total of 197 articles were published during the period, there were 9 articles that met the criteria of the research quality assessment form andwere associated with studies on the use of medicinal cannabis-containing drugs in psychiatric patients.

Conclusion: The use of cannabidiol or CBD in the treatment of psychiatric disorders including depression, schizophrenia, and insomnia in males and female adults and adolescents,. The articles revealed the positive therapeutic effect of cannabidiol or CBD since it could  alleviate the symptoms of the disease. As a result, patients’symptoms were improved in high-risk groups, those with early symptoms, and those with psychiatric disorders. In addition, they revealed noside effects from the treatment using CBD.
