The results of the HIV/AIDS patient management system development King Narai Hospital

Abstract

Purpose: To study the results of the HIV/AIDS patient management system development at King Narai Hospital.

Methods: The study is developmental research used one group pre-development post-development design. The system, developed by multidisciplinary team, composed of physician, nurse, pharmacistand mainstay of the AIDS group, was used for treatment of HIV/AIDS patients at King Narai Hospital in 2014. This research has been evaluated in antiretroviral therapy compliance, viral load and CD4 cell count. The population was HIV/AIDS patients treated at King Narai Hospital. A total of 1249 patients and 478 matched criteria were recruited for the analysis.

Results: 1) The averaged post-development score of HIV infection/AIDS knowledge is higher than the averaged pre-development score (P 0.00). 2) The post-development compliance score is higher than the pre-development compliance score (P 0.00). 3) The amounts of patients showed viral load <20 copies/ml before the development is 31.1%, meanwhile after the development is 86.8% (P 0.00). 4) The mean CD4 counts of the patients prior to the development are 466.11 cells/mm³, as compared to 528.66 cells/mm³ after the development (P 0.00).

Conclusion and discussion: The HIV/AIDS patient management system development at King Narai Hospital is a process created in order to be continuous and sustainable, using concept based on participation in problem solving by multidisciplinary team leading to good outcome, increase knowledge about self-care, make the patients able to face their own health problems more and emphasize the importance of the drug administration as well as the follow-up, resulting in better mean of knowledge score, behavior and treatment results.
