Background: Sleep is essential to a child's growth and development. The factors affecting the sleep hygiene of the infants from past studies were the relationship between parents and child, eating patterns and child’s temperament. Study of other factors such as home/family environment, bedtime, activities before going to bed and sleeping environment have limited information.
Objective: To study factors affecting sleep hygiene and prevalence of good sleep hygiene for 1-year-old children.
Methods: A Cross-sectional study. Data were collected using questionnaires from parent of 100 1-year-old children between April and September 2021. The data were divided into good and poor sleep hygiene. The good sleep hygiene group consist of Sleep consolidation, which is a short nap during the day and sleep continuously during the night and Sleep regulation, which is the ability to start falling asleep on its own and sleep when awake.
Results: The prevalence of good sleep hygiene was 7%, categorized as sleep consolidation 55% and sleep regulation 9%. The factors affecting sleep hygiene and sleep regulation were statistically significant: the participants were the parents of the children (p-value = 0.003, 0.014 respectively). In sleep consolidation, parents’ marriage status have statistically significant (P-value=0.019).
Conclusion: : Parents are more important than others in promoting healthy sleeping hygiene and the ability to self-regulate the sleep of infants, including the parents’ marriage status is an additional factor to sleep during the night continuously. These factors promote sleep hygiene, affecting the child’s growth and development including preventing behavioral problems of children in the future.
