Abstract

This descriptive research aimed to: 1) analyze the exploratory components of the competency in caring for patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis among professional nurses in a tertiary hospital, and 2) evaluate the competency level of those professional nurses. The sample group consisted of 340 professional nurses working in inpatient or outpatient departments at a tertiary hospital, selected through stratified random sampling. The research instruments included a personal information questionnaire, as well as a professional nurse competency assessment form on caring for patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis. The content validity of assessment form by IOC ranged from .60 to 1.00, and its reliability was at the .88 level. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and exploratory factor analysis. The results were as follows.

1. The competency in caring for patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis among professional nurses in tertiary hospitals was divided in 6 distinct components: 1) communication, teaching, and technology (23 variables), 2) knowledge and skills in peritoneal dialysis (14 variables), 3) counseling (6 variables), 4) research and development (6 variables), 5) pre- and post-Tenckhoff catheter insertion care (4 variables), and 6) ethics and patient rights advocacy (4 variables), measured by 57 component indicators, with factor loadings ranging from .458 to .830. All components together explained 74.82% of the competency in caring for patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis among professional nurses.

2. The overall competency level of professional nurses in caring for patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis in tertiary hospitals was at a moderate level (M = 3.45, SD = 0.82).

Therefore, tertiary hospitals should implement the six competency components as a framework for developing professional competency of nurses who care for peritoneal dialysis patients.
