This one-group pretest posttest design quasi-experimental research aimed to study the effects of a project-based teaching and learning program on cognitive and the 21st century skills development among nursing students at the Buddhachinnaraj College of Nursing. The experimental group comprised all of the 70 fourth-year students. The main instrument was an 8-week project-based teaching and learning program. The other instruments used for data collection were: 1) a personal record form, 2) an assessment form for cognitive skills' development in students, and 3)a questionnaire on the 21st century skills. The assessment form yielded a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient reliability value of 0.8, while the questionnaire on the 21st century skills obtained a content validity index (CVI) of 0.73 as well as a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient reliability of 0.96.
Data were collected between June and August 2022, then analysed by using frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test in statistics was also applied. The key results showed as follows.
1. The experimental students participating in the teaching and learning program had higher cognitive skill than before using the program at the statistically significance level of 0.05 (p-value <0.05).
2. The experimental students who joined in the program had their 21st century skills higher than before using the program at the 0.05 statistically significant level (p-value<0.05).
The findings suggested that nursing colleges should manage the project-based instruction in order to increase nursing students’cognitive outcome and a higher level on the 21st century skills.
