Abstract

This cross-sectional study aimed to study the prevalence, and predicting factors of depression among elderly people living in community hospitals. Sample was 410 elder people in community hospitals in Bueng Kan Province. Three screening tools, phq-2, phq-8, and phq-9, were implemented to screen depression. Data were analyzed by using both simple and multiple logistic regression.

Results showed that the point-prevalence of depression was 25.61%, with 7.32% of   male population and 18.29%of female population suffering from this mood disorder. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that six factors were found associated to depression in elderly with  statistical significance (p<0.05): divorced or separated marital status (OR=4.65, p<0.01, 95% CI=3.14-68.27), alcohol consumption (OR=10.81, p<0.01, 95% CI=2.68-43.56), loss of loved ones (OR=7.15, p<0.001, 95% CI=2.53-20.21), self-perceived health status (OR=5.71, p<0.05, 95% CI=1.31-24.86), insomnia (OR=4.67, p<0.01, 95% CI=1.64-13.32) and insufficiency of  income (OR=3.67, p<0.05, 95% CI=1.22-11.07).

The level of depression in the elderly population, assessed by Q9, was 25.60%. The severity level was very low, low, moderate and severe (76.19, 14.28, 7.61 and 1.90%, respectively).  Males had a tendency of depression yielding 19.36%, but no suicidal thoughts were detected. Females had a tendency of depression yielding 29.42%, and it was found that females had suicidal thoughts yielding 1.90% from the measurement with Q8. Six factors were found their relationships with depression in elderly.

The results could be benefit to develop prevention programs for reducing depression prevalence and its consequences in elderly population.
