Abstract

This study aims to preliminary validate Self-Forgiveness Scale for Juvenile Delinquents. The scale was built on the original, the State Self-Forgiveness Scale1 It consisted of two subscales: (1) affect and behavior dimension and (2) belief dimension. The study participants were 226 juvenile delinquents, mean age 17.56 + 1.56 in the Juvenile Detention Center and Regional Juvenile Vocational Training Center, Songkla Province. Research instruments were comprised of Self-Forgiveness Scale, Guilt Scale, and Subjective Happiness Scale. Results revealed that the Self-Forgiveness Scale for Juvenile Delinquents consisted of 17 items, overall internal consistency was .88, and internal consistency for each dimension was .79 and .83 respectively. Results of criterion-related validity testing with Guilt Scale and Subjective Happiness Scale: Overall, the scale had negative linear relationship with the Guilt Scale (r = -.24, p < .01). Meanwhile, it had positive linear relationship with the Subjective Happiness Scale (r = .34, p < .01). Result of Confirmatory Factor Analysis showed that the model of self-forgiveness in juvenile delinquents, consisted of two factors as in the original scale, was consistent with the empirical data (Chi-square=91.122 df= 54; p= .051; CFI= .983; TLI= .968; RMSEA = .045). The results in this study reveal that this scale is proved to be valid to measure self-forgiveness in Thai juvenile delinquents.
