Smoking is a behavior that affects smokers in many ways, especially among young people, and there are many factors that can influence smoking. This descriptive correlational research aimed to study the knowledge, attitudes, and non-smoking intention among nursing students at Nursing College from November 2021 to March 2022. The sample was purposively selected and consisted of 364 students from four academic years, in 2021. The research instrument used was a four-part questionnaire: Personal Information and Smoking Behavior and a questionnaire on Nursing Students' Knowledge, Attitudes toward Smoking, and Non-Smoking Intention. These questionnaires were reviewed and approved by three experts prior to data collection. Data analysis using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation coefficient.
The results revealed that the nursing students had a high level of knowledge about smoking at 84.9%. The majority had a negative attitude towards smoking and consistent intentions to not smoke all years, about 96.98%. Knowledge was negatively correlated with attitudes toward smoking (r = –.107, p < .01) but positively correlated with the intention not to smoke (r = .167, p < .01). Attitudes toward smoking were negatively correlated with the intention not to smoke (r = –.204, p < .01). The findings from this study can be used as baseline information for educational management and as a guideline for promoting health education to prevent smoking and to encourage smoking cessation among nursing students at Nursing College.
