The effect of teaching by the guide care of patients with cardiac arrhythmias on knowledge and behavior of novice nurses in the cardiac intensive care unit

In the past, the development of novice nurses’competencies who care for patients with cardiac arrhythmias, which are taught by mentors, no guide care of patients with cardiac arrhythmias. This quasi-experimental study aimed to 1) develop a guide care for patients with cardiac arrhythmias; 2) compare the knowledge scores and behavior of novice nurses before and after they had been taught by the guide care of patients with cardiac arrhythmias; and 3) evaluate novice nurses and mentors’ satisfaction to the guide care of patients with cardiac arrhythmias. The samples consisted of five novice nurses who started a new job in the intensive care unit and had worked in cardiac care unit for 1-2 years. The research tools were a guide care of patients with cardiac arrhythmias, knowledge test, questionnaires for evaluating novice nurses’ behavior and satisfaction of both novice and mentor nurses. The data were analyzed using descriptive, the percentage, mean, standard deviation. Wilcox on Sign Ranks and Friedman were used to test the difference of the mean.
The results of the study showed:
1) Guide care for patients with cardiac arrhythmias included the interpretation of the ECG, analysis of ECG and arrhythmias nursing care.
2) The means of knowledge scores of the novice nurses after teaching by guide care were statistically significant higher than before teaching (p < .05)
3) The means of behavior scores of novice nurses after teaching by guide care were statistically significant higher than before teaching (p< .05)
4) The novice nurses’ satisfactions to the guide care of patients with cardiac arrhythmias were at a high level.
5) Mentor nurses’ satisfactions to the guide care of patients with cardiac arrhythmias were also at high level.
Suggestion: the development of novice nurses ‘competencies who care for patients with cardiac arrhythmias, should be taught by mentors and guide care of patients with cardiac arrhythmias
