Motorcycle Driving Behaviors of Teenage Students at Thammakosit School, Na Mom District, Songkhla Province
Abstract
This is a cross-sectional descriptive research. The purposes of the study were to examine
motorcycle driving behaviors of teenage students at Thammakosit School, Na Mom District, Songkhla
Province and to find to reduce behaviors causing road accidents. The subjects of the study were teenage
students who were studying at Thammakosit School, Na Mom District, Songkhla Province and who were
more than 15 years old in the academic year of 2009. 188 subjects were selected by systematic random
sampling. The data was analyzed by using descriptive statistics which are frequency distributions,
percentage, average, median, standard deviation, mean, maximum and minimum.
The results of the study showed that 61.86 percent of Thammakosit School teenage were female
students and the other 38.14 percent were male. Their ages ranged between 15 to 19 years (mean =
16.65). 42.37 percent went to school by motorcycles which sizes were normally 110 cc and 125 cc. In the
aspect of driving motorcycle behaviors, it resulted that 32.29 percent of the students experienced road
accidents before. The accidents were striking animals and motorcycles, 13.56 and 12.71 percent
respectively. The students never wore helmets while they were driving motorcycles, 28.8 percent. Among
those who wore helmets, most wore the helmets some times: maximum was 64.29 percent. 16.1 percent of
the students had been drunk while driving. 30.51 percent did not stop their motorcycles when the traffic light
turned red. Their driving speed was 61 to 80 kilometers per hour, 54.25 percent. 84. 75 percent had carried
more than 1 passenger. 33.05 had motorcycle driving license cards. The majority had 1 year license cards
the most, 84.75 percent. They sometimes drove without taking their driving license cards, maximum was
53.84 percent. 90 percent had used their mobile phones while driving. 77.12 percent had been arrested and
fined. 53.38 percent were arrested and fined because they did not wear helmets.
