บทคัดย่อ

The aim of this descriptive research was to investigate knowledge, attitudes and
behavior of alcohol consumption amongst high school students enrolled at the
Nam Nao Wittayakhom School in Nam Nao District, Phetchabun Province. The data
were collected February 2011, using a self-reporting questionnaire from a
representative sample of 65 high school students. A database was created using
Epi Info™, and STATA 10 was used to compute frequencies, percentages, means,
standard deviations, medians, maximal and minimal values, as well as ranges and
95% confidence intervals. The high school students were 15 to 19 years old (mean
16.65, SD 1.08 years) and 70.77% were females. The majority (50.77%) of students
originated from farming families, and 52.31% consumed alcohol during the last
month. The majority (58.46%) incorrectly responded to over 80% of the
questionnaire as far as knowledge about the alcohol issue was concerned. For
example, about the legal age for purchasing alcohol just over half of those
questioned (55.38%) got it wrong and quite a large proportion did not agree with
the opinion statements about the negative aspects of drinking alcohol (such as,
‘drinking alcohol is a waste of money’). However, responses about the frequencies
of personal alcohol use at different situations (including ‘at school’ and ‘in a
temple’) indicated a moderately serious level of inappropriate drinking behavior.
While the high school students had good knowledge about the sale of liquor laws
and the legal age for consuming alcohol, they often chose to ignore these laws and
appeared unaware of the penalties for breaking them. It is recommended that
schools should opt for activity days (school ‘camps’) during which students are
provided with enjoyable experiences of ‘partying’ without the consumption of
alcohol. Schools should also involve teachers and parents as role models to
promote abstinence from alcohol.
