Learning method of the learner is important information that the instructor should
know prior to arrange learning activity in corresponding to each learner. The objectives of
this study was to describe learning method and achievement of the students whose
enrolled in 514 301 Public Health Nutrition course. Three parts questionnaires including
learning behavior, note taking behavior and view to self-learning of the students to study
achievement (grade) was deployed. Data was analyzed and described as percentage.
Seventy-nine students (89.8%) of a total of 88 students (89.8%) were participating in this
study.
The results showed that students were performing regularly on time including
presenting in class and submitted homework. Others were done fairly namely pre-class
preparation, searching from other sources apart from classroom, reading suggested book
besides document provided by lecturers, asking both in and out-classroom, discussing
issues related to the subjects with friends, presenting reviewing sources, self-problem
solving. Regarding note taking behavior, it was found that student take note lecturers’
words as much as possible, followed by copying content written on white board or power
point presentation. Few students borrowed friends’ lecture notes for copying.
Regarding views on their learning style and opinions, it was found that what the
student had done regularly or very often in each grade were consultation with friends to
make more understand, participating learning activity in classroom as they thought that it
could improve learning capability if they shared and exchange opinions with friends.
Student accepted rule or teaching method given by the lecturers, paid attention on activity
in classroom and learned in classroom more than self-studying at home.
What the students had done occasionally in each grade included, self-searching,
felt that they had to get in class more than willingness to attending the lecture, able to
decide which contents were important and paid attention on examination as they wanted
to get high score rather than they would like to get the real knowledge
Things that student have rarely done and never done in each grade included,
less attention in classroom, always selected contents they thought it was most important
and it was not necessary to study what the lecturer thought it was important ,ignoring
topics they did not understand and student thought it was important in classroom to get
along with their friends and doing wrong if they let the students learning according their
want, students thought they should show-off that they wanted to have better score than
their friends and let their friends knowing they were success in study and to get better
achievement sometimes we need to take advantage from friends.
So that teaching method should integrate various methods in order to provide
proper environment and corresponding with student potential. This will result in benefit to
each student.
