Outpatient nurses play a crucial role as the first point of care for pediatric patients with congenital heart disease, who are scheduled to undergo cardiac catheterization, a key procedure for both diagnosis and treatment. Appropriate pre-procedural preparation significantly influences patient safety, cooperation, and the overall effectiveness of treatment. This article aims to describe the roles of outpatient nurses in providing fundamental knowledge regarding procedural steps, indications, precautions, and potential complications, as well as in conducting comprehensive patient assessments, including history taking and physical examination.
The care of pediatric patients with congenital heart disease undergoing cardiac catheterization should be guided by a holistic nursing care approach, encompassing physical, psychological and emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions. Systematic preparation addressing both physical and psychological aspects enables pediatric patients to safely undergo procedures, reduces the risk of complications, and promotes favorable health outcomes. This reflects the essential role of outpatient nurses in delivering high-quality, comprehensive, and holistic nursing care.
