Abstract

This descriptive correlational research aimed to examine self-management behaviors and factors associated with self-management behaviors among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The sample consisted of 100 patients with COPD in Mueang Phayao District, Phayao Province. Data collection instruments included a demographic questionnaire, a self-management behavior assessment scale with a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.79 and a content validity index of 0.67-1.00, and a knowledge test regarding the disease and self-management practices with a Kuder-Richardson reliability coefficient of 0.85 and a content validity index of 0.75-1.00. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, point-biserial correlation coefficient, and eta correlation coefficient.
The findings revealed that factors significantly associated with self-management behaviors among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at the .05 level (p<.05) included education level, which demonstrated a statistically significant weak positive correlation (r=+.084, p<.05), and overall knowledge regarding the disease and self-management practices, which showed a statistically significant low positive correlation (r=+.239, p<.05). When each dimension was considered separately, only knowledge related to emotional self-management demonstrated a statistically significant low positive correlation with self-management behaviors (r=+.228, p<.05). In contrast, age was found to have a statistically significant low negative correlation with self-management behaviors (r=-.246, p<.05). Therefore, in terms of policy and clinical practice, healthcare personnel should integrate disease-related knowledge and self-management practices into nursing care plans to promote self-management among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, with an emphasis on behavioral modification processes that facilitate disease control in order to enhance patient’s quality of life in the long term.
