Abstract

The purpose of this research aimed to study factor related to depression in Thai elderly patients undergoing Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD). The participants were one hundred Thai elderly with ESKD patients aged 60 years and over who were undergoing CAPD and receiving the service at six PD clinics in Phayao province, Thailand. The research instruments consisted of information on demographics, clinical outcomes and the Thai Geriatric Depression Scale (Cronbach’s alpha=0.81). Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, The Spearman Rank Correlation Coefficient, and Chi-Square test.
The results showed that Thai elderly with ESKD patients receiving CAPD had presented for suggestive depression (43%) and had depression (5%). The Spearman’s correlation test found that age and experienced with peritonitis were significantly positively associated with depression in Thai elderly with ESKD patients receiving CAPD (rs=0.20, p< 0.05 and rs=0.29, p < 0.01) respectively. This study also found that low monthly income had significantly positively associated with depression in older Thai with ESKD patients receiving CAPD (𝑥2=49.00, p<.01). This study found that the factor of dependent with CAPD and having comorbidities had not significant to correlate with depression in Thai elderly with ESKD patients receiving CAPD.
Nurses and health professional should develop the special intervention to decrease the level of depression for them. The early investigation the prevalence and risk factors of depression since they have been starting to undergo CAPD is very important especially to focus on Thai elderly with ESKD patients receiving CAPD who are old- age, experienced with peritonitis and low monthly income. These may prevent and reduce the incidence of depression in Thai elderly with ESKD patients undergoing CAPD in the future.
