COMPARATIVE STUDY OF PAIN LEVEL BEFORE AND AFTER COOL HERBAL MUD TREATEMENT WITH THAI MASSAGE IN ELDERLY WITH KNEE PAIN

ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND: The previous studies found that 43.9% of the elderly with knee pain causing by osteoarthritis. In Phayao province, many methods of Thai traditional therapy were treated knees pain and the different results had been shown. Consequently, we decided to study about cool herbal mud treatment with Thai massage in relieving knees pain for being the standard treatment of Thai Traditional Therapy.
OOJECIVE: to measure effectiveness of cool herbal mud treatment with Thai massage for reliving knee pain in elderly.
METHODS: The study was intervention study. The subjects were the elderly osteoarthritis who age 60 years old and above with suffer from knee pain. The study took place in all branches of government run hospital and district health promotion hospital centers there ought Phayao, equipped for Thai therapeutic massage. We studied in one group population and measure the pain level before and after treatment using cool mud treatment with Thai massage. The assessment of pain of scale was measured by the facial scale and visual rating scale. We used paired t-test statistic with statistically significant at p≤0.05 to compare the data.
RESULTS: We collected 78 patients with osteoarthritis, 61 cases were female and 17 cases were male.The most range of age was 60-64 years old. The most of body mass index was 24-29kg/m2. The subjects with knee pain in just one knee were 42 (53.85%) and subject with pain in both knees was 36(46.15%). The statistical analysis showed significant reduction in knee pain after therapy with cool herbal mud with Thai massage (p<0.001).
DISCUSSTIONS AND CONCLUSIONS: The cool herbal mud with Thai massage showed a significant reduction of pain
