BACKGROUND: Drug related problems in the elderly is an important issue that should be addressed and resolved to reduce the morbidity, mortality rate and the economic loss in our country.
Objectives: This research aimed to explore drug related problems in elderly people in Ban Thung Mok, Chiang Kham District, Phayao Province.
Methods: Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted in 95 elderly people, aged 60 years and over. The data was analyzed by descriptive statistic and content analysis.
Results: The results of this research reflected the problems of drug use behavior among elderly people. Top six problems were inappropriate drug storage in the refrigerator ‘incorrect position’ (89.47%), drug labeling (53.68%), medication use without indication (52.63%), non-adherence (36.84%), drug-drug and drug-milk interactions (31.57%), and discontinuation of medication or continuity of use (18.55%) However, elderly people in Ban Thung Mok correctly stored their medicine in appropriated containers, not exposed to sunlight, avoid heat and humidity. Recurrent allergic reactions, financial problems and drug-abuse were not found in this research.
Conclusions and disscusstions: There were various drug related problems found in elderly people in this research. These results can be used to encourage the Sub-district Health Promoting Hospital in Ban Thung Mok to improve rational drug using in the elderly.
