Introduction: Effective video media can help to promote knowledge, confidence, and clinical skills of the learners
Research objectives: To compare knowledge and confidence 1) between the control group received usual instruction and the experimental group received usual instruction cooperated with video lesson and 2) between pre-and posttest within the experimental group and To study 3) the satisfaction on the video lesson in the experimental group.
Research methodology: This quasi-experimental study (two groups’ pre-and posttest design) included 80 sophomore nursing students at Boromarajonani College of Nursing Bangkok, equally divided 40 persons into the experimental and control group with same characteristics on grading, age and sex. The research instruments included: 1) a video lesson entitled “Discharge Planning for Patients with Tracheostomy and Caregivers”, and the questionnaire with 4 parts: 2.1) personal information, 2.2) the knowledge test, 2.3) the confidence in nursing practice, and 2.4) the students’ satisfaction. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, paired t-test and independent t-test for the test of difference between groups.
Results: The results showed that the experimental group had 1) a higher score of knowledge than the control group and a higher score of confidence in nursing practice than the control group (t=-5.003, P<.001); 2) The post-test scores of knowledge and confidence of experimental group were significantly higher than the pre-test (t=-10.07, P <.001 respectively); and 3) the overall satisfaction on a video lesson of the experimental group yielded at a high level ( =54.23 SD=4.55). The subscale with the highest average score was applicability (
= 4.73 SD=0.45) following by format (
=4.59 SD=0.55), content (
=4.53 SD=0.49), and components (
=4.35 SD=0.66), respectively.
Conclusion: This study indicates that the usual instruction collaborated with video lesson helps students to enhance their knowledge and confidence in nursing practice and can be used for self-study to improve nursing competency.
Implication: This video lesson should be applied to use in nursing students for discharging the patient with tracheostomy/caregivers and tested for knowledge and skills of the patient with tracheostomy/caregivers.
