Relationship between Health Literacy, Self-Efficacy and Self-Care Behaviors among Patients with Multiple Chronic Diseases

Introduction:Patients with multiple chronic diseases who exhibit self-care behaviors, self-efficacy and health literacy might lessen serious complications.
Research objectives:Tostudy correlation between health literacy, self-efficacy and self-care behaviors of patients with multiple chronic diseases.
Research Methodology: This correlation descriptive research included 149 patients as participants who had two or more chronic diseases, Specific selection. Data were collected using a personal information, health literacy,self-efficacy and self-care behaviors questionnaire. Data were analyze using descriptive statistics, and Pearson correlation statistics to analyze association among variables. The questionnaires were validated for content with, Cronbrach’s alpha coefficients of 0.98,0.89, and 0.95, respectively.
Result: Most participants had health literacy and self-efficacy at a moderate level (64.43% and 50.34%, respectively), and had high levels of self-care behaviors (55.70%). Health literacy and self-efficacy were significantly associated with self-care behaviors, (r= .332, p <.01 and r= .538,p<.01,respectively).
Conclusion:The participants had moderate levels of health literacy and self-efficacy, while health literacy and, self-efficacy, were associated with self-care behaviors.
Implications: Results of this study, provide the fundamentals for planning for interventions on promoting self-care behaviors and develop health care models for patients with multiple chronic diseases to ensure appropriate self-care behaviors.
