Violent Behavior and Need Assessment for Enhancing Social Intelligence to Change Adolescent’s Violent Behavior

Abstract

This study is a survey research using questionnaires and interviews. The study aimed to examine violent behavior and need assessment for enhancing social intelligence to change adolescent’s violent behavior. Participants included 400 adolescents aged 12-15 using multi-stage random sampling method in Phen District, Udonthani Province. Purposive sampling was also used to recruit the participants. A total of 10 experts were interviewed. Two focus groups were conducted with 15 adolescents and a group of 10 stakeholders involved in violent behavior of adolescents. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and modified priority needs index (PNImodified). Qualitative data were also analyzed using data triangulation to create conclusion and affirm the conclusion. Findings indicated that almost half of the participants were ninth graders (47.45%) and 42% of them was 14 years of age. Most of the participants were female. Roughly three-quarters of participants (78%) reported low level of violent behavior. The most reported violent behavior among the participants was self harmfulness, particularly thinking or committing suicidal idea (Mean=1.47, SD=.78)

         Findings of need assessment for enhancing social Intelligence for violent behavioral change of adolescents were as follows: 1) violence behavior: thinking or acting violently is the most important (PNImodified = .88); and 2) social intelligence: perception of surrounding society reasonably and correctly is the most essential (PNImodified = .32). Focus group discussions revealed that the more the participants reported their weakness in social intelligence, the higher they reported lack of life skills. Moreover, factors related to violent behavior were individual behavior, family, and society, in particular, self-harmfulness and harm others.
